Sigma Alpha Epsilon (ΣΑΕ) is the largest North American Greek-letter social college fraternity. It was founded at the University of Alabama on March 9, 1856. Of all existing national social fraternities today, Sigma Alpha Epsilon is the only one founded in the Antebellum South.

The Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity has more than 310,000 initiated members and more than 12,000 undergraduates at 229 active chapters and 19 colonies in 49 states and provinces at present.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon is currently the biggest fraternity at the University of Hartford.  The Connecticut Lambda chapter was the 195th chapter of ΣΑΕ founded in 1969.
